The Nukteris was a schooner owner by Willem Auret. She arrived in Simon's Bay on 18 November 1895 and was badly damaged on 4 December 1895 when she grounded at Muizenberg beach. She was eventually repaired on the 13 January 1896.
In order to try an recoup the heavy repair bill, Auret used his schooner to transport lime from Buffels Bay to Cape Town. Early in August 1897 she was lying in Buffels Bay taking on her third cargo of lime when a south-east wind suddenly got up and turned gale force. These conditions are not known at this time of the year.
Because of being in such an exposed position the skipper tried to beat out to sea shortly before midnight on 7 August 1897, but by then it was too late. At 00h30 she drifted onto the rocky reef to the east of this site and went to pieces. One crew member grabbed onto a floating box and was saved, but the other 4 crewmen were drowned.
