You are looking for a small white canister with a orange top. This location is a memorial for former Fighting Irish All-American, George "The Gipper" Gipp.
"The Gipper" was Notre Dame's first All-American.
George played half-back, quarterback, and punter.
He is still considered today to be one of the most versatile athletes to play the game of football and is the subject of Knute Rockne's famous "Win one for the Gipper" speech. Gipp died at the age of 25 of streptococcal throat infection, days after leading Notre Dame to a win over Northwestern in his senior season.
George was born here in Laurium, MI in 1895.
If you look closely while searching you will see a brick that Ronald Regan purchased for the memorial with his name on it. Ronald Regan portrayed Gipp in Knute Rockne, All American in 1940.
