The idea to build a National House in Karlin occurred in 1903 when this part of Prague was award status of a town. The National House of Karlin was built between 1910 - 1911 by architect Josef Sakar. National Houses were symbols of patriotic feeling in the late 19th century. The street, where the National House is placed, was originally called "Strossmayerova". Since 1933, it bore the name of the Lithuanian Grand Duke - Vitoldova. In 1952 it was named Hybesova after Joseph Hybes, who was the member of Social Party and co-founder of the Communist Party, because the Communist Party was founded in the National House on 16th May 192. But it's not certain, if Mr Hybes attended this event, because he died in the same year. National House of Karlin served its purpose until the end of the First Republic. Just before World War II, it was bought by the Czech Radio, but it started using it after the war. During the war Germans used the studio for their own radio station - Radio Melnik. Currently two Czech Radio regional stations are broadcasting from this building - Radio Regina and Radio Region. Studios are used for recording dramatic production.
