Geocache Description:

8-5-2012: Beginning September 1, 2012 TOPTRAILS Outdoor Park located in Talladega County, Alabama will begin to charge a small fee for Entrance into the Park for all Riders and visitors. The fee will be $5 per person per day with children under 11 free for riders and visitors. Wristbands will be issued with different colors for different days

Welcome to the decommissioned Coosa River Ammunition Storage Annex just north of the city of Talladega. This 2,834 acre "annex" was affiliated with the larger Anniston Army Depot. It was closed in 1988 and is now open to the public. This is a great place for Jeep and ATV enthusiasts.

While driving around the paved, gravel, and dirt roads you will notice concrete bunkers, or igloos. These are large, arched, earth covered concrete structures that are designed to contain the accidental or purposeful detonations of military ordinance that they once contained. They are also spaced about 450 feet apart to prevent chain reaction explosions with adjacent igloos.

For more information, see cache GC20V6J by Woodstramp.

The railroad tracks, for the most part, have long since vanished and all that remains are four docking stations where the train would load or unload the munitions. This cache is hidden on or near one of the four loading/unloading docks. This loading dock is not as well preserved as another in the complex; however, we wanted you see it nonetheless.

The original cache container is unique and was provided by the late Doris Fee. Born in 1922, she made it through the Great Depression and both World Wars before being introduced to Geocaching by her son, CaverScott. She even went on a mini-cache run in Florida before moving to Alabama. We lost "Dodie" two years ago this month and thought it was fitting to place a cache near this historic place. The original container is unique and something that would make her smile (Kitty Wind Chimes); hopefully, it will make you smile as well.

Alas, some idiot took the wind chimes so now we have a small container in its place.
