Geocache Description:

Kepaniwai Park’s Heritage Gardens, established in 1952, celebrate the diverse heritage of Hawaii’s immigrants as well as its indigenous people. Traditional structures include a Japanese tea house, Hawaiian grass shack, Chinese moon gate, New England salt box, Philippine hut, and Portuguese outdoor oven.

Scenic 'Iao Valley is the site of one of Maui’s most historic battles. In 1790, Maui's tribal army lost to the warriors of King Kamehameha I. The fierce battle ended with so much carnage that bodies clogged the nearby river. The stream became known as Wailuku (waters of destruction) and the battle was named Kepaniwai (damming of the waters). This victory allowed King Kamehameha to unite the Hawaiian archipelago under his rule.

Park hours: 7 a.m. to 7p.m.
