Geocache Description:

This cache is on the line of the old Meon Valley Railway and was placed in conjunction with the Hampshire Monthly Midweek Cache Event #19 held on 14th July 2010.

The Meon Valley Railway opened on 1st June 1903 providing 8 to 11 trains a day between Alton and Fareham. The line was built to a high standard with the expectation that through trains from London would use it. There was one daily London to Gosport express service that used the line but the additional services never materialised and in 1931 the direct connection to London was cut and all services terminated at Alton in a bay platform. The line was eventually closed to passenger traffic on 5th February 1955 predating the Beeching cuts by some 10 years. The part of the line where the cache can be found continued carrying freight up until 1961 and further north freight was carried until 1968.

The line of the track from West Meon to the Eastleigh-Fareham railway now forms an 11 mile recreational footpath and cyclepath. The line north of West Meon is not used as a footpath as the removal of a viaduct and the presence of tunnels makes this not possible.

Further information on the history of the line can be found on the related webpage.

The cache is a small loc'n'loc in a camo bag and has been slightly relocated.
