In 1839 the New Zealand Company arrived in Pito-one [Petone] to purchase land for settlers who were greeted by the local Te Atiawa people. Since then the pure artesian [underground pressurised] water situated beneath the Hutt Valley has provided a supply of water to the inhabitants of the region.
This supply originates from the waters of the Hutt river, which enter the secure artesian aquifer at Taita gorge.
The water is naturally filtered through the aquifer over several years before discharging through the sea floor into the Wellington harbour.
This sculpture represents a water oasis and provides access to the pure artesian water supply, a resource treasured by residents throughout the region. The taps and drinking fountains supply this untreated artesian water for public use.
