In the old Gorge Cemetery beneath the Ruahine Ranges, there used to be a small granite tombstone curved in the shape of an artist’s palette marking the resting place of one of New Zealand’s finest portrait painters. The simple insertion read ‘ Gottfried Lindauer – Artist’ However it has been recently replaced by a more conventional headstone of rough granite with a flattened surface in the shape of an artist's palette, with a memorial inscription on it. A sign points to the grave site from lower down at the steps.
Behind the bust, and now part of the new Art and History Galleries, is a replica of Lindauer's studio built in 2001. The studio contains furniture and prints of Gottfried Lindauer’s paintings. The Centre is open from 10am-4pm every day and entry is free.
NB Please take extreme care crossing the railway track as you approach the cache location. It is an uncontrolled crossing and has a steep slope up to the track.
