Der Wolfgangsee ist einer der bekannstesten und größten Seen
im Salzkammergut des Bundeslandes Salzburg.
Der See entstand durch die Erosionstätigkeit des Traungletschers in
der letzten Eiszeit.
Am nordwestlichen und südöstlichen Ende des Sees erstreckt sich
ausgedehntes Moränengelände, das auch das Seebecken
auskleidet.
Durch Gletscherabschluss bedingt, lag der Seespiegel im frühen
Eiszeit ursprünglich auf etwa 600 m ü. A. (Meter über Adria). Für
die Zeit um 18.500 v. Chr. wurde ein spätglazialer Seespiegel von
544 m nachgewiesen, womit bereits weitgehend das heutige Niveau von
538 m ü. A. erreicht wurde. Durch den Geschiebeeintrag des
Zinkenbaches erfolgte eine Umbildung des einheitlich geformten
Seebeckens, wodurch der etwa 2 km breite See durch diese
Einengung in zwei Seebecken geteilt wurde. Die Entwässerung
des Sees erfolgte immer über die Talfurche der Ischl. Ein
Zusammenhang mit dem Fuschlsee bzw. die Entwässerung über den
Mondsee ist auszuschließen.
Der Wolfgangsee wird südwestseitig durch die leicht zerfallenden
Gosauschichten aus Mergel, Sandstein und Konglomerat, nordostseitig
vorwiegend durch die Lias-, Hierlatz- und thitonischen Plassenkalke
des Schafberges umrahmt.

The Wolfgangsee is one the most famous and biggest lakes in the
region Salzkammergut of the federal state Salzburg.
The lake originated from the erosion activity of the
Traungletschers in the last ice age.
At the northwest and southeast end of the lake vast moraine terrain
is found which also formes the bottom of the lake.
Caused by the glacier flow, the lakes level was around 600 meters
over the Adriatic in the early ice age. For the time around 18,500
B.C. a late-glacial lake level of 544m was found, which is to a
great extent identical to today's level of 538m. A reorganisation
of the uniformly formed lakebasin occurred through the deposit flow
of the Zinkenbach by which the about 2 km wide lake was divided in
two sea lake basins.The drainage of the lake always occurred
through the valley of the Ischl. A connection with the Fuschlsee or
drainage over the Mondsee can be excluded.
The Wolfgangsee is surrounded by the slightly disintegrating Gosau
layers from marl, sandstone and conglomerate on its
southern-western side and mainly by Lias-, Hierlatz-and
Plassen-lime of the Schafberg on the north-east-side.
