Geocache Description:

CHEILE NEREI

BASIC INFORMATION

Cheile Nerei (Nera river canyon) is situated in the national park " Cheile Nerei-Beusnita". Wild rocky valley has mostly canyon character whose walls are up to 400 meters high. Romania's tourist red sign leads through the entire valley. The whole valley is about 25km long. It´s possible to practise rafting there.

GEOLOGY

Below Sopotu Nou begins on the north side of beautiful karst valley river Nera. Leads along the river trail carved into the rock with two fords and a karst lake Lacul Dracului (we really recommend a visit).

National park Cheile Nerei-Beusnita is located in a Banat´s karst area in western Romanian Carpathians. Karst is the nature of large plates that are cut to deep canyons. The nicest of them is Nera river canyon with plenty of caves, karst lakes, and a suspension side valleys.

Romania's tourist red sign leads the entire valley but frequent wading is present in case of high water level.

At some places, the canyon walls fall directly into the river and it is impossible to wade. Here, tunnels are carved through the limestone walls, as a remain after the Roman soldiers.

CAVES

During your trip through the valley, you can see many caves. Most of them are not exploited and invite you to explore...

TUNNELS AND BRIDGES

There´re many tunnels here which are artificially done. Most of them are short, but sometimes require headlamp. Tall people or those with a backpack also may have a problem.

There are two bridges in the valley .The first of them - and the most important for you - is in the 1/4 of the whole way (from Lacul Dracului to Sasca Romana). Halfway is a wade. And the secound bridge is at the end of the valley before Sasca Romana. .

Bridges over the river is a chapter themself. Mainly because there are almost none, and wading is the usual method of overcoming the flow.

Bridges sometimes can look strange but we are convinced that they are safe and overcoming them is a nice light adrenaline.

HOW TO LOG THIS CACHE

1. Take a photo of you or your gps at least half of the bridge (EC coordinates, spoiler photo 1) and another one everywhere in the canyon (spoiler photo 2)

Attach these two photos to your log.

Send me an email through my profile with answers to these questions:

2. Of which rock is the local canyon mainly made up?

Questions from a wooden sign placed on the bridge (EC coordinates) :

3. How far is it to a camp?

4. In which language is a sign written?
