This is the 18th in my series of hides near fire lookouts. Here you will find Calamity Butte Lookout, 6695', in the Malheur National Forest.
Calamity has been home to a fire lookout every summer since 1927. When you see the view you'll understand why! The Region 5 (California-style) cabin from 1927 is still there and was in use right up until the newer 50' pole tower with octagonal cab replaced it as primary lookout in the late 1990's. The lookout is staffed from mid-June through October. Please only climb the tower if you are invited up. Remember, this is the lookout's summer home, so please be respectful. When the fire danger is high, during, and after thunderstorms, the lookout will likely be very busy doing his job, and that is providing early detection to new fire starts. Oh, and daylight hours only please. Note for 2020: due to the COVID-19 pandemic, visitors will likely not be permitted inside staffed lookouts to protect the safety and wellness of the person on duty. The road up is pretty good up until the last 3/4 mile which gets steep, rough and rocky. 4WD suggested. The cache is a small, clear snapware container hidden north of the old lookout cabin, out of sight from the newer tower.
