Geocache Description:

The Custom House has dominated the quayside since it was built in 1818. It was designed by William Burn complete with Doric style covered walkways with columns supporting the roof and was considered by many to be one of the finest in Britain. Up until recently the property was occupied by HM Customs and Excise and housed an interesting museum devoted to the work of the Custom and Excise over the years. It included a model of an illicit whisky still which unfortunately was not a working model. As a result of a re-organisation of the Custom and Excise Service, Custom House has closed its doors and the staff have been moved on to other offices. I don’t know what’s happened to the display items in the museum, especially the Whisky Still! To the front of the Custom House is the Quay dominated by the Beacon Fountain with its light and cast iron clock which is still in working order. The PS Waverley calls in here during the summer season to pick up anyone who fancies a sail on the last seagoing paddle steamer in the world. Sailing ships are often seen tied up to the quay and in 2011 the Tall Ships called at Greenock. The Custom House is an “A” listed building which has recently undergone massive refurbishment work. Is is hoped that it will soon be reoccupied by various small business concerns. The new Beacon Theatre and Arts Centre, to the east of the Custom House, has recently opened and is proving to be very popular with the local community. There are plenty of parking spaces around Custom House Quay and the cache is close by on the east facing side of the building. It is a busy area especially in the summer months so stealth is required.
