Geocache Description:

Congrats WV_RhinoRiders on FTF!!!!

You can make this a quick stop off of I-64. We spent an hour here on our way to Kentucky, and thought this would be a cool site for an earth cache! hope you enjoy this place as much as we did!

Our GPS was being screwy so coordinates I'm sure aren't all that good. but nevertheless there are plenty of signs and you cant miss this place.

Lost World Caverns located near Lewisburg, WV

120 feet below the Earth's surface into a vast wonderland of stalactites and stalagmites. Lost World Caverns, discovered in 1942, is a truly magical place for both young and old. It takes approximately 45 minutes to walk through. Self-guided tours are available so you can take your time to explore the cavern at your own pace. Just remember to stay on the trail. A guide sheet is provided to tell you about the many different formations that make up this 1/2 mile loop. No matter what the temperature on the outside, the cave always remains a constant 52 degrees. A light jacket and good shoes are recommended.

Know the difference between a stalactite and a stalagmite. They occur in limestone caves. The stalactite is above, and hangs downward like an icicle; the stalagmite is below and sticks up. They grow in pairs, the slightly acidic water dissolves some of the limestone, carrying it downward. When the water evaporates, the limestone appears to have flowed downward. Some of the water does not evaporate until it has fallen through the air, and landed on the floor, the remaining limestone building the stalagmite. Sometimes the stalactite is missing, as they sometimes break off and fall; you will often see their pieces on the floor. Or human visitors may break them off, and take them away. Often, the stalactite and stalagmite will connect, and become a column.

DO NOT TOUCH ANYTHING IN THE CAVERNS!!! IT IS UNLAWFUL AND JUST UNCOOL!

Mostly self guided with a flashlight and a guide book.

But for you more adventurous folk, tours are available.
