This cache will take you to the central site of the Bennac Potawatomi Indiana village. This village is unusual in that it was a post removal village. That means that the village was permitted to remain in the area after the forced removal of the nearby Menominee Potawatomi Village on September 4, 1838. The village was relatively small with approximately 75 inhabitants and existed until approximately 1854.

Stephen Bennac, while often referred to as a chief, was actually the "headman" of the village. A headman was similar to being a mayor. He was a Metis which means he was half French and half Potawatomi. The Elder of the village was John Peashway, a full blooded Potawatomi. He married Stephen Bennac's daughter, Mary Ann. They eventually moved to South Bend and both are buried in the Notre Dame cemetery.

Make sure to read the signage in the open area that describes the village area. Also look out over the Tippecanoe River and imagine the scene of villagers fishing the bountiful waters or maybe preparing to launch a canoe to go hunting.
