A series of caches to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Lowestoft to Great Yarmouth railway's closing.
This cache sits on the site of Gorleston station.
Easily accessible, this can be a quick cache and dash - or you might want to wander the paths that would have been the station site and extensive sidings, all long gone.
As holidays-with-pay became more widespread in the first part of the 20th century, many holidaymakers would pack the platforms on hot summer Saturdays.
Gorleston On Sea would have been a hive of activity. A well equipped station complete with a large goods shed, coal depot, taxi rank and booking office.
The end of it's life was a drawn out affair. In 1966 it became unstaffed, freight went the following year and in 1968 the large footbridge and signal box were demolished and one of the tracks removed - by this stage the line was served by just a single diesel unit. It finally closed in 1970.
For many years afterwards the trackbed became popular with dogwalkers.
Then a new bypass road was built following the route of the former railway. Work got underway in 1991 with diggers uncovering the old neglected platform for the first time in many years. The dual carriageway was opened two years later.
Moving north from here there is no sign of the line at all. Roads and retail parks now fill the area once dominated by the trains. Only Station Road in Great Yarmouth and the Station Hotel sign give a nod to the past, close to the site of where the grand old termus building, Yarmouth Southtown, once stood.
This cache is a small click and lock container in a camo bag with some swaps, notebook and pencil.
