This cache is located within the Mauna Lani area, just off one of the public beach access trails. Although the final section of terrain is rough (closed-toed shoes recommended), it should be a relatively relaxed find. Informational signs along the trail offer a light education on the geology and the ancient Hawaiians who inhabited this area over 800 years ago. The short walk to the end of the trail is worthwhile as it will lead you to the tranquil Kalahuipua'a fish ponds and the coastline
Start by taking Mauna Lani drive, which is located between mile markers 73 and 74 along highway 19. Proceed through the traffic circle to continue straight on Mauna Lani Drive. Turn left onto Pauoa Road and then right into the public parking lot. The parking lot is located at 19° 56.513' N, 155° 51.833' W (see waypoint). This point is the header for the beach trail and offers bathrooms, fresh water, showers and a picnic area. Be sure to look for the feral cats that roam this area. Proceed along the beach trail toward the ocean. The cache is located along the way. Once you've located the cache, the short walk to the end of the beach trail is highly recommended. This will take you past the idyllic Kalahuipua'a fish ponds. These are a network of seven fish ponds (Kalahuipua'a, Kahinawao, Waipuhi, Waipuhi Iki, Hope'ala, Milokukahi and Manoku) which were constructed by ancient Hawaiian's to raise fish to supplement their ocean fishing efforts. Aquaculture samples taken from the bottom of these ponds provide evidence of their existence as far back as 250 B.C. The original cache contains the following items: Toy Dinosaur, Toy Soldier, Air New Zealand Kiwi Keychain, White Shell Necklace, Chicken finger puppet, Halloween notebook, Santa figurine, Manua Lani golf ball, Manua Lani golf tee, Fishing sinker.
