In honour of Otago's Scottish heritage, the Clutha was named after one of
Scotland's mightiest rivers, the Clyde, Whose Gaelic name is Clutha.
The Maori name for the Clutha is Mata-au, which refers to the current, formidable in places for anyone attempting a crossing.
There have been a number of crossing places at Roxburgh, put in place by the European settlers and those who followed them, linking the East and West banks of the Clutha River.
Records detail a punt/ferry and three bridges.
The stated coordinates will take you to an information board conceived and erected by
The Teviot Valley Walkways Committee. This is waypoint #1.
Use the information on this board to find the coordinates for the final location as follows:
S 45 32.A
E 169 18.B
Table Of Ferry Usages 1885.
Where:
A=Beaumont Sheep/Pigs, the last three digits
B=A-33
The container at the final is small, covered in black masking tape and with a log only. PBYOP.
The final is a little exposed to muggle view so I suggest the photo taking ploy. As it is a very photogenic spot that should be no problem.
