Geocache Description:

Welcome to Washington Square Park!

In the fall, this park is crowded and bustling with humanity. Students hurry to their classes, parents and nannies walk and play with their children, commuters travel to their jobs via the ubiquitous NYC foot-mobile, entertainers perform and pass the hat, chess players wait for challengers, dogs walk their owners, tourists from all over the globe take photos, and retirees sit on the benches and people-watch. But amidst this sea of Homo Sapiens, another species is at work. The eastern gray squirrel (sciurus carolinensis) is laboring to prepare for the long winter. While the bipeds go about their various activities, these small quadrupeds are eating and gathering as many nuts, seeds, berries, and conifer cones as they can find, and stashing away what they cannot consume immediately. But one of these industrious little creatures took the time to tell me that there were great hiding places in this park that they do not use, and invited me to "squirrel away" a stash of my own. You do not have to disturb any landscaping or foliage to find the cache. In fact, your feet never need to leave the path. Nor do you have to dismantle anything!! Please do not detach the cap from its perch. Just open it, then return the log and screw on the container after you have signed in. No room for trades or travelers, and you'll need to supply your own writing utensil. (I've added an extra point to the difficulty to account for Muggle traffic.) And please make sure only the squirrels are witnesses to your search! (PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH THE PARK SPRINKLERS. THE CACHE IS NOT IN A SPRINKLER!!!!)

This Cache was awarded the 2011 Cleverest Hide / Best Camo Award, by the Metro New York Geocaching Society.
