Geocache Description:

Shenzhen Mangrove Coastal Ecological Park (深圳红树林生态公园) was established in 1999, and it has been formally opened to the public since December 2000. The total area of the park is about 21 hectares and is China's smallest national park. Hong Kong's Mai Po Marshes are one of the world's great birdwatching paradises as birds migrating from Siberia rest in the fishponds. The same birds also rest in the mangroves on Shenzhen Bay a scant two miles north of Mai Po. The bird watching is legendary, but if you are not into birds, the park provides coconut palm shaded walks and views to die for across Shenzhen Bay.

The park was firstly located on the north bank of Shenzhen Bay, and it was built from reclaimed land of the Coastal Road Project. For the purpose of protecting the mangroves, the Government of Shenzhen altered the alignment of the Coastal Road by shifting it to some 200 metres north. The Coastal Road, which was originally designed to pass through the mangroves, is now running along the northwestern edge of the mangrove stands, and the reclaimed land platform on the west of the mangroves was re-designed as today's Magrove Coastal Ecological Park.

There are more than 200 species of plants in the park. Of these there are some 170 species of arbours and shrubs. Over 90% of the park is covered by green area, constituting an attractive scene of local plants from the subtropics. The grass is lush, with trees along the foot paths and flowers flourishing. Standing on the east of the Coastal Park road to watch the sea, mudflats and numerous water fowls, and together with the 9 kilometre stretch of the mangroves in Futian against the backdrop of the high-rise buildings, form a gorgeous picture which let visitors linger and enjoy. With the continuous improvements of various facilities, the Mangrove Coastal Ecological Park will display the splendour of a modern garden city of Shenzhen, and contribute to the beauty of Shenzhen and enjoyment of the public. Admission is free.

Getting there:
From Shenzhen Metro Houhai Station Exit E1 (深圳地铁后海站E1出口) walk about 200m to the west to Coastal City bus stop (海岸城站). Take bus no. J1 to Mangrove Park (红树林站).
