Milford Cutting Nature Reserve.
Milford village is the product of the linen industy of the 19th century. The village was built around the original flax mill which later became a linen factory. The mill was closed in 1980 and was demolished in 1996 and developed a a residential property.
Milford Cutting was part of the Armagh City to Castleblaney Railay line opened in 1909 and then closed in 1957. The Milford Platform can be clearly seen today and is the longest platform of the G.N.R, at 349 feet.
The nature reserve was established here by the Department of the Environment in 1978 and came under Ulster Wildlife Trust management in 1982. The reserve is a great example of a wildlife corridor. It is a safe haven for mammals and birds to live and move through.
At certain times of the year areas of the reserve are grazed, usually by donkeys or goats. Please do not approach them or feed them as they can be unpredictable if provoked or scared.
You enter the village from the Monaghan road, drive through the main street past the R.G.McCrum institute and school house to the outskirts of the village. The nature reserve is situated up a farm track on the left just after the last housing development. Please park carefully off the track as the farmer needs access, we normally park at the Y in the track. The nature reserve is on the right before you reach the farmyard.
The cache is a regular tablock box, It contains log book, pencil and some swops.
During periods of wet weather the track leading to the reserve and parts within the reserve itself can be very muddy, so suitable footwear is advisable.
This cache is placed just outside the boundary of the nature reserve and will be much easier retrieved than our previous cache hide here.
Due to tree coverage at this time of year gps signal is limited and we were able to get a reading within 5 metres of the cache but with the clue there should be no problems.
Part of the nature reserve has a duck board walkway and steps leading to a wooded area and river/ please take the time to explore this beautiful place.
