Geocache Description:

A short walk from the Navan Centre to Navan Fort.

Located at the Navan Centre.

Much of Armagh’s history is centred around the establishment of the legendary Emain Macha or NAVAN FORT, which lies to the West of the City and was founded by the Pagan Queen Macha around 300BC.

The Navan Interpretative Centre offers visitors an understanding of the diverse history of the area and the myths and legends linked with Navan. Learn about Pagan Ireland, Celtic Warriors, Ulster Kings and Queens, and the archaeological finds that pieced history together. NAVAN FORT is the origin of a world renowned series of stories known as the Ulster Cycle. The stories recall ancient Irish legends, such as Cu Chulainn, King Conor, Deirdre of the Sorrows and recounts famous battles like the Cattle Raid of Cooley.

Brian Ború, the High King of All Ireland, camped at Navan Fort during his visit to Armagh to make offerings to the Church and was buried in the grounds of the Church of Ireland Cathedral after the Battle of Clontarf in 1014AD.

According to the early Christian scribes, Irish history began with the founding of Emain Macha. Archaeologists have made many fascinating discoveries at Navan, including the traces of a giant Celtic temple.

NAVAN FORT is open to the public all year. To reach the carpark location take the A28 out of Armagh. The Navan Centre is well signposted on this road. If the gates to the centre are closed, park at the gates and access is available on foot.

This cache is placed between the Navan centre and Navan Fort taking in a pleasant walk along gravel paths in a beautiful area.

It is well worth spending some time at Navan Fort, both outside and inside when the Centre is open.

The cache is a small drill bit box with only a log so remember to BYOP

There is another cache placed near the Navan fort site.
