The Dragon is a legendary creature, which is prevalent to the mythic culture of many countries. Britain, with its diverse history, has a tradition of dragons stemming from Saxon, Celtic and Norse influences. Like Scotland, Wales is a land of witchcraft and dragons, with a legacy of colourful mythology and renowned supernatural mystery. Welsh culture and identity has been characterised down the centuries by Celtic myth, legend and fantasy and the image of a Dragon.
We also know that the people of Wales are by nature passionate, expressive and creative - famous for singing, acting, storytelling, politics and poetry.
Wales is well renowned as "the Land of Song", so we have included an old account from the archives which echoes sentiments of friends returning laden with treasure from vanquishing a famous Dragon singing the “Greeting” (reprise)
The song points out that everything in the valleys is beautiful, the fires shine brighter than gold, the moon is whiter than silver and the stars shine brighter than gems…and perhaps they might have been better off to be here and enjoy it rather than messing about vanquishing dragons in far off lands.
From the Perth Chronicles of 1 August 2010BC about the Mega Albanwr
Tattylicious reporting live from the scene- a first hand account of the marvels that was well lush
“To properly say "Hello" to Mollyjak’s committee, a celebration was planned, that rivalled anything that has ever been seen in the 800 year old history of Perf -indeed, of the whole Shire. Weezy having appropriated the treasure from the slain Dragon ensured the event was well funded. Pezzini made sure everyone was aware the event happening by lighting beacons on all the nearby hills and translating the Elvish scripts into Welsh.
I personally know five or six musicians who spent weeks working on their birthday song for the banquet. Everyone in the surrounding county was invited to the general celebration. Folk even came from as far Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch.
Food was sourced from exotic places like, Plwmp, Mold and Splott. The kitchen staff at the Maltings were busy as fiends.
Not only food and music either: the Rings that the returning heroes brought back were melted down and new coins commissioned by Eclectic Penguin; silverware polished; Zetec's fireworks--arrived in a cart from Golly near Wrexham, apparently using gunpowder from Gosh in Armenia. The comedians arrived from Llantwit Major. Sports stars from Aberflyarf. Nothing but the biggest and the best.
‘Ohh whats occurrin’ here?’ Said Left Handed on the Mega b-log, ‘Quite a nice greeting, if you ask me.’
The day of the party was beautiful--blue skies after a threat of rain the day before, and warm as toast for the first of August. Guests began arriving at lunchtime, and the food and beer flowed out like the River Taff. Presents--oh, the presents! The best Welsh trinkets ever seen in the Shire; some of them dwarven-crafted in Pantypwdyn and elven runes from Shwt. And when the darkness eventually fell, fireworks like nothing you've ever seen! ‘Pictures in light, they were’ said the Maths Teacher.
It was a Mega party never to be forgotten by any who attended. That's the truth of it! “
We at Mega Scotland wish Mega Wales all the best for your event in 2011.
… we’re expecting some of the renowned Welsh singing and hopefully an event to match the one above.
So back to present time…the dragon is an image entrenched in our imaginations, invoking images of cunning fire breathing monsters, guarding vast hoards of gold and jewels within deep caverns.
Dragons weren’t exclusive to Wales. St Serf is said to have destroyed a dragon living in Dragon Hole on Kinnoul Hill, Perth in the 6th century. Many believe it still lives on. Perhaps you may glimpse him on your travels in Perthshire???
This cache was been placed for Meet the Welsh Dragons!!! on 1 August 2010
Be careful because Dragons drool is acidic enough to melt you on the spot, providing they don't belch and incinerate you first
Dal ati! Daliwch ati! Pob lwc.
