This is one of a Civil War themed set of caches hope you enjoy. The cache is a camoflage Clip n lock box situated on the outskirts of the quiet village of Rowton and affords a fine view of a 6’ by 6’ sandstone and brick building. This is reported, by tradition, to have been used as a field hospital during one of the last major battles of the English Civil War; the battle of Rowton Heath.
There is parking available close by in the bus stop but beware of passing traffic.
The Battle of Rowton Heath
King Charles the 1st had entered the besieged city of Chester on the 23rd September 1645, his army deployed approximately 3 miles to the south east of Chester on Milners Heath. Cromwell’s Parliamentarian forces who had been trailing King Charles through the Welsh hills had entered Cheshire, at Holt and headed towards Rowton. They were deployed on Hatton Heath. The actual battle took place on 24th September 1645 involving both cavalry and foot soldiers and is reported as one of the last major battles of the English Civil War. Both the Paliamentarian forces and the Royalist fought initially in small skirmishes from about 0900 along the surrounding narrow lanes and hedged fields (not great terrain for Cavalry charges) with the final larger battle at about 1600, on Rowton Heath, which resulted in a decisive Paliamentarian victory over the Royalist army.
Legend has it that King Charles stood and watched this defeat from the now called ‘King Charles Tower’ which is located on the North-East corner of the City Walls. Although Rowton Heath cannot be seen from the Tower it is likely that he actually witnessed his defeated army in a later skirmish on Hoole Heath before fleeing back to the relative safety of Chester.
Why not visit the Tower and see what you can see!
Have a closer look at the 'field hospital' , which is now rather overgrown, why not travel along Rowton Lane where you will come across a memorial on the village green to the battle, see how it played out.
When searching for this cache there is no need to cross the boundary fencing the cache can be accessed from the protection of the grassed area immediately overlooking the field beyond.
Enjoy
