Geocache Description:

The other Pebble Beach!

We discovered this amazing area and wanted to share the wonders of tafoni with you. Also check out the crystallized salt strands among the tide pools after you grab this bottle preform.

This is a great place to spend some time. There is a nice little pebble beach but there's also plenty of sand too. Kids will love it here~~exploring the beautiful tafoni formations (click the 'Related Web Page' link above to learn more) as well as the tide pools (if you catch it at a lower tide). There are a couple of picnic tables and a restroom.

Tofoni formations at Pebble Beach

Pebble Beach is part of nearby Bean Hollow State Beach that includes two sheltered coves, separated by a rocky point. The beach is frequented by dog owners, as it is one of the few local state beaches that allows dogs. The bedrock at Bean Hollow consists of sandstone and conglomerate beds of the Cretaceous Pigeon Point Formation. A native bunchgrass (Nassella pulchra) colony occurs at the beach.

Pebble Beach, originally known as Arroyo de Los Frijoles, marked the southern extent of Rancho Butano, which was granted in 1838 to Ramona Sanchez.

It's also located near what used to be the site of Loren Coburn's Folly: Pescadero's Pebble Beach Hotel.
In the 1890s Loren Coburn, the most hated man in Pescadero, built the Pebble Beach Hotel overlooking the popular and locally sentimental pebble-covered beach south of the tiny village. From what we know guests never stayed overnight– except for the watchman who was there to protect the new hotel from vandalism. (Among modern conveniences the Pebble Beach Hotel offered the luxury of hot and cold water). Business associates of Coburn's (perhaps anxious to take advantage of the illiterate but wealthy man) sometimes held private parties at the hotel.

Free entrance and parking for only a few cars. Chemical toilets.
A few picnic tables and a barbecue grill.

UPDATE 7/2/11: The old structure has been torn down and has been rebuilt from scratch about 20 feet away. As I was searching for a hidey-hole at the new spot, ECP spots what she thinks is an old water bottle. I reach for it and it turns out to be the cache container!!! One of the construction workers - one Greg Snyder - apparently found it during the demolition and replaced it after the new structure was completed. He even signed the log and left some swag (a set of earplugs). How cool is that!? So thank you Greg Snyder!
