Geocache Description:

The Airmen Memorial.
This cache is the second one along a circular walk of approximately two and a half miles, starting and ending near Somerleyton Church. Parking is available next to the church car park. The footpath is a few yards to the left as you leave the car park on the right hand side of the road. The cache is located close to the war memorial on Waddling Lane,

A memorial to the airmen killed when their aeroplane crashed during the Second World War (1939–1945). The aircraft was an RAF Mosquito nightfighter being flown by two young airmen of the United States Navy. On 14 November 1944, they were chasing an air-launched V1 flying bomb but were mistakenly shot down by British anti-aircraft fire. The full story can be found in Final Flights by Ian McLachlan. The memorial reads: Lt. J. Black USNAF Pilot and Lt. T. Alken USNAF Navigater. Gave their lives in defence of this country returning from operarational duties on November 14th 1944. Greater love hath no man than this. That a man lay down his life for his friends. Looking across the field opposite the memorial, you will see a small crater where the plane came down. The cache is small micro, so bring your own pencil. Please leave exactly as found.
