Geocache Description:

This cache, which can be reached via a bit of a circular hike along a beautiful and remote part of coast to the Hoek van Bobbejaan, forms part of the Shipwreck Series. For the series methodology and more info visit SS: Shipwreck Series via the related web page link.

On 3 May 1968, the Phyllisia, a 452 ton Cape Town trawler went aground here. The 50 metre fishing vessel struck the rocks just before midnight. Eleven of her crew got ashore in life rafts; the remaining 14 were airlifted from the stricken vessel by two helicopters from 22 Squadron based at AFB Ysterplaat.

The Phyllisia was ripped open in four places along one side of her steel hull by jagged rocks. The hull and crew's quarters soon became completely submerged, but the bridge remained high out of the water.

The 30 ton of fish were left to the countless seabirds that lined up on the rocks and waited for their meal to be washed ashore.
