The Tucumcari Outdoor Classroom project was initiated by involved citizens and adopted in 1999 by Canadian River Soil and Water Conservation District and developed on land owned by the City of Tucumcari. The project is used as a learning center for area students. The first improvements were trees and native grasses. There were 300 trees planted plus 2 xeriscape gardens. Two Kiva learning centers were made for students to sit and relax while listening to instructors.
Annually, on Earth Day in April, the Tucumcari Elementary School and neighboring schools in Quay County come to the Outdoor Classroom to ten learning stations where professional volunteers with natural resource backgrounds teach.
Many groups and businesses have supported the project, which is on going. There are paved trails, birdhouses and a new bat house located here among other things.
Look for various species of birds at the pond.
Look for a cache that is small but can handle very small trade items. (Magnetic)
Take time to walk on the trail, sit and look at the area and enjoy.
