Geocache Description:

10 years of SA caching Event

A South Australian state celebration

Roll up

Roll up

The state is having a very special birthday.

10 Years and we are still Mad about the cache Sam.

On New Years Eve join us at Lyrup in the Murray Riverland to drink a toast to South Australia's longest running active cache which will be celebrating it's 10th Birthday.

This special cache has reached double figures so come celebrate a decade of caching and see in the new year at one of the birthplaces of caching in this state.

The Riverland Geocache by Sam Morgan (GC114) placed on the 01/01/2001 was the second cache placed in our state after the first placement of Sandy Creek in December 2000.

Since then the Riverland Geocache has gone on to be the oldest active cache this state has with a total of 170 finds as of July 2010 and is a much loved find when you read back through the logs.

The Parrots are going to set up a camp in the Lyrup Community Sports Complex Oval and invite you to join us for a couple of days of fun.

On Friday the 31st set up and have a New Years Eve party.
On Saturday the 1st Jardry is hosting an event on the reserve by the Lyrup ferry.
Saturday night we will organise a dinner at the Lyrup Community club.
Sunday pack up for home and do some CITO.

Mrs Parrot has created a commemorative pathtag for the first 45 teams who log and attend the event.

If you are thinking about alternative accommodation to camping at the oval we suggest you book early as the river is always popular during the holidays.

Our thanks to Team Madcat for their support of this event.

January 1 by MadCat (130 found)

We were disappoined that due to work commitments were unable to make the event for New Years Eve. We were however truly amazed by the turn out of dedicated cachers to the event, especially considering the plague proportion mosquitos the Riverland has been experiencing and the heatwave over the weekend. Good on you all for braving the conditions and managing to have a good time.

We were glad to be able to attend the Dinner at the Lyrup club, catch up with a few old faces and meet a lot of new ones. Thanks all for a great evening. We are glad that the cache has lasted as long as it has and that people were willing to come all this way to celebrate it. Hopefully it won't be flooded and will last for another ten years for cachers from everywhere to enjoy.

Great job ParrotHead and we loved the Mascot Madcat which was truly a mad cat and the pathtags were great!!!!!!!!!!!

We hope this year to at least double our finds lol! Which last year was actually three, not two as previously thought. We have enjoyed caching over the years and hope to continue to into the future, we have mostly loved the way that you find things that you just would never have known were there if it were not for the cache. Our children are 4wd, camping babies and so they have enjoyed the hunt for treasure also and I am sure if they put the pressure on we would be inspired to find many more, more often.

Cheers Sam and Jedda

*So good to see that there are so many that are still mad about the cache!!!!!!!!!

Well this event was an idea that I had several years ago and I am very happy to have been able to host it with Mrs Parrot.
When I told her about having a 10 year birthday party for this cache early this year she was happy to help me make this a reality.
We looked around for a venue then we contacted Mad Cat and he was happy for us to go ahead.
So the planning began in earnest. We couldn't get the venue and had to relocate to the river which then started to flood .
We then managed to relocate back to our original spot thanks to the wonderful people of Lryup being willing to host us at their sports ground.
Mrs Parrot did so much work in the background. Organising the pathtags, making contact with people at Lryrup and the party bags for everyone.
Leading up to the event we began to worry about the mosquito's but we went ahead and I am very glad we did.
The day started hot and just got hotter.
People rolled in over the day and started setting up camp. Flipper delighted in showing us his thermometer which was registering 43 degrees
The McKee Clan rolled up and commenced to erect a tent city.
We escaped to the river during the day for some respite and Southern Cross and schatzsuche1 came down with a hammock which they strung between 2 tree in the river.
Back to the sports ground and a BBQ dinner before setting up on the oval.
We had lots of entertainment with a lighting show, spots of rain and a dual rainbow.
As the sun set we formed up a circle of citronella candles to try to hold back the barrage of insects.
Flippers bug zapper died when it was overrun by insects.
Still we didnt care we were having a great time.
It was also Mrs Parrots birthday and several rounds of Happy birthday were sung.
Mogni brought a birthday cake which was very nice of her. Thank you so much.
We had a great time waiting for midnight and Skippy lead us in a countdown.
Then there was hugs and kisses all round as we welcomed in a new year.
Out came the birthday cake to celebrate the birthday of the Riverland cache.
We sang Happy Birthday for the cache a bit more socialising then off to bed.
Up in the morning and fired up the BBQ to cook Bacon and egg sandwiches.
We got through 2.5 kilos of bacon and 2 dozen eggs. Lots of hungry geocachers.
Later In the morning a group of us went over to the cache and sang another rousing verse of Happy Birthday.
Then off to the Lunch event organised by Jardry.
People then stayed by the river or went out and did some caching before meeting up for dinner.
Then over to the Lyrup Bowling club for our evening meal. The event you have when you are not having an event.
We were delight to see Sam and Jedda and with about 30 other people we had a great night at the club.
Then in the morning those of us left packed and headed off, some for home and others to look for more caches.
Thank you so much to all of you who came and made this such a wonderfull time.
We loved putting it on and from the comments you sure seemed to have enjoyed it.

The Parrots think this log sums it up very nicely -

WOW!! What a way to see out the year! So many things stick in our minds...The pathtag, the heat, the party bag, the heat, sitting on the oval being squirted with water, 43.5C in the shade, catching up with friends both old and new, the heat, the wonderful double rainbow that lasted and lasted, the heat, the clouds getting heavier and darker, the heat, sitting on the oval enjoying the raindrops falling on our heads, the heat, the lighting show that lasted all night, the mossies, the heat, the bbq, the mossies, the citronella candles everywhere, the mossies, the aroma of gallons of aeroguard, bushmans and other assorted bug keeper offers that didn't work, the mossies, the birthday girl enjoying being sung at, the mossies, the birthday cake, the mossies, seeing in the new year, bed, fantastic bacon and egg breakfast, singing happy birthday to a cache in the middle of nowhere, attending Jardry's picnic event, caching with four other teams, the dinner that wasn't a dinner (officially), the rain, bed, caching on the way home just to make the trip even longer. WOW!! what a weekend! Many, many thanks to Mr and Mrs Parrothead for the organisation that went into the weekend and all of the little 'treats' that were so generously given!
