“Region of Ruins” Series Details:
End a great summer of geocaching off
the right way! This is an 8-cache series (with a huge
9th bonus "mega-cache") visiting one set of ruins in
each municipality in the eastern Niagara region. The ruins cover a
full range of age: some are more than a century old, some less than
a decade. Unlike last summer’s Foundations series, the rule I
set for myself was to find sites with standing (or somewhat raised)
structures for you to interact with and explore rather than just
admiring an old concrete pad. These are by no means the
‘best’ sites that could have been featured in each
city, but most of the really good ones were on private property or
were strictly marked with warning signs. The sites selected are in
public places, have land-owner permission, or are in remote enough
locations that they seem to be long
forgotten.
Please collect
together a good supply of both child and adult trading items before
seeking these caches. There are no micros in this series –
each cache is large and well stocked with two groups of items:
adult interest and child interest. Please trade equal value (or
up!) so that the caches can still be interesting finds months from
now.
Specific “Two on Three” Details:
This cache visits two locations along highway #3. A coordinate
bottle at stage 1 leads to a final that history/nostalgia buffs
should get a kick out of (see samples in gallery). You may find
yourself staying for a while. Approach stage 1
by turning off onto Minor Road. You can position your car
just right so that the ruin itself blocks your car from being seen
by houses on the highway. Stealth is required, so do not search for
long: the bottle can be found at ground level in the very
north-west corner of this location. The final location is more
difficult because there is virtually nowhere to park along highway
#3. Bring a pair of rubber boots because the easiest approach is to
pull off onto the nearest side road and walk along the muddy base
of the drainage ditch beside the highway. It is quite deep compared
to the road shoulder and therefore allows for maximum stealth
– no traffic will even see you on your approach to the cache
area.
On a side note,
the Wainfleet Bog area has recently
(July 2010) been given the distinction of a formal warning for an
established population of black-legged ticks. Take extra
precautions clothing-wise and look at the identification photo
below in the gallery.
Gemstone Bonus Cache Details:
Not to be unoriginal, but why mess with
a formula that works? On the inside lid of each of the 8 regular
caches in this series you will find letter-to-number equivalents
that will allow you to discover the location of the 9th
bonus "mega-cache" (a full-sized camping cooler full of items).
