Geocache Description:

There were many old macrocarpa trees on the edge of the Napier Golf links course which were felled by the Unison Power Company because of their close proximity to the power-lines. There was an initiative from the nearby Waiohiki Creative Art Village to carve 6 of the stumps into roadside artworks. The Stump Carving project began in September 2006. At the time this cache was created, work had just started on the last stump so we may get to see it mould to a new artwork.

Stump 4 carving is of a local golfing legend who was the first Maori to win the NZ Open Golf Championship in the 1920’s and is the name of this cache. Kapi is a descendent of local chief Tareha Te Moananui and the sculptor of this stump was Hugh Tareha, a direct descendent of Kapi Tareha.

The cache is a micro and is on the roadside so you do not need to climb the fence. Beware of muggles as you are in very open view from the golfers on both sides of the road, the club house, and passing traffic but if you spend some time taking photos of the stumps I am sure you could get the cache if you are careful. Please ensure cache is replaced so it can't be easily seen.

Beware this is a busy roadside and cars are travelling fast along here - take extra care.
