Not the most scenic cache, this may well mark the final resting place of an important historical figure.
Charlottesville abounds with various ways to remember Thomas Jefferson, but his long relationship with Sally Hemings is generally overlooked. Depending upon who one believes, Sally Hemings was either Jefferson's daughter's servant and a family house slave, or his lover and mother of several of his children.
Discussions of the possibility Jefferson fathering children with his slaves began even before he assumed the office of the President, and continue to this day. DNA testing is not 100% conclusive, but known Hemings descendants carry genetic material that links them to the Jefferson family.
While TJ never freed Sally, she was inherited by Jefferson's daughter, who later gave her permission to leave Monticello. Two of Heming's son were freed, and Sally lived the remainder of her life with them in Charlottesville.
This cache is placed on property that was once in the Hemings family, and while no one knows for sure, many believe that Sally was buried here in a family plot. Eventually the property was sold to the University of Virginia, and has past through many other owners.
