Geocache Description:

Located in Gillies Lake Conservation Park.

Film can with hanging device - bring pen or pencil just in case. Please replace where found - almost out of sight. Co-ordinates were meaned and checked. Park in designated areas only - and walk!

Gillies lake was named after Alex Gillies, who with fellow prospector Benny Hollinger discovered a gold deposit in 1909 which became the great Hollinger Gold Mine. When you are at the cache sight - look towards the east on the other side of Texas Gulf Hwy to see a rock cut - and rock outcrop. This was an island in a much bigger Gillies Lake. The area and lake to the east was filled with mine tailings. Tisdale Township was surveyed in 1904 and the original notes and plans clearly show the island. I am not sure if it reached this spot - if not, it was wet.
