This cache has been archived.

Krypton: As there's been no cache to find for months, or you have neglected to do necessary maintenance, I'm archiving it to keep it from continually showing up in search lists, and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements. If you wish to repair/replace the cache sometime in the future, just contact us (by email), and assuming it meets the guidelines, we'll be happy to unarchive it.

Thanks for your cooperation!

Geocache Description:

Communication Hill (formally known as The Peppermint Bark Communication Hill Cache) was designed by a kid for kids. My son put some of his own loot in the box for other to enjoy. Enjoy one of the best vistas (360* of the silicon valley) anywhere in the city of San Jose.

!!! NOTE !!! WARNING !!!
There are all sorts of critters up there. From hawks to snakes to rodents to man eating spiders. Use common sense when turning over objects, walking or touching anything. During the summer months it is not uncommon to see gopher snakes (they look a lot like rattle snakes) & mud wasp nests IN the ground. Use caution and have fun.

In the heart of San Jose rests Communication Hill, a Microwave jewel managed by AT&T. My son and I hid this kid friendly cache outside the restricted area (which is clearly surrounded by a huge metal spiked fence and warning about radio waves.) The vistas and views are breathtaking and you can see 360* views of the Santa Clara valley from this perch.

History... "The San Juan Bautista Hills, as the highest point in the middle of Santa Clara Valley, are a particularly suitable location for communications transmission. In the 1950s, the Santa Clara County Communications Center needed a new location, having outgrown its facility on Tully Road. The Center also needed a high point from which to transmit. The Center constructed its new home atop Oak Hill at the end of Canoas Garden Road in 1960. Presently 11 microwave transmitters are maintained at the County Communications Center by the County of Santa Clara, the City of San José, and the Federal Aviation Administration. The Center also transmits in radio waves. The County Communications building is in a restricted access area, on stable bedrock, and is seismically reinforced, to help it survive a major earthquake or other disaster. The County communications tower stands 435 feet above sea level. In the 1970s, AT&T Company followed suit and built a communications tower just south of the County center. AT&T’s tower stands 430 feet above sea level and AT&T operates five microwave paths. These prominent features lead the area to be called Communications Hill." Taken from (visit link)

Follow the gravel trail/road until you get to the destination. Take note, if you travel off the road, be careful of wasp nests that are burrowed into the ground. They aren't to happy if you get close. Lastly there is a San Jose Fire Dept, if you have you kids the firefighters love to say "Hi" if they are in their yard.

!!!UPDATE!!! 10/23/2010
Cache container has been upgraded to a military ammunition box. Hence the name chance. Originally the container was a Peppermint Bark tin, thus Peppermint Bark Communication Hill Cache.
