Spanish Shanty Barge (Tar
Barge) In 16 to 18 feet of water, this old barge sits at the broad
mouth of Spanish Shanty Cove off the north side of Shell Island.
The 150-foot barge is showing its age with holes all in it. The
barge holds a nice sheepshead, flounder and grouper population, and
other sea life such as gray snappers and speckled trout (spotted
weakfish) are seen from time to time. Shells, sea urchins and sand
dollars are all about. Visibility ranges to about 15 feet on an
average day (with an incoming tide).
