Geocache Description:

A gentle walk in one of Scotland's nicest areas .
Just off the Cowal Way .

The late Sir Harry Lauder was an eminent star of the stage and a local farmer, fortunately his talent as an entertainer was able to underwrite his farming activities which struggled on the hillsides around Glenbranter .... bleak winters and loss of sheep and lambs to the "Glenbranter Beastie " , meant that farming in the area was a hard and often dangerous undertaking.
Sheep found without heads ; shepherds mysteriously disappearing ; half eaten deer and cattle led to many armed searches for the "Glenbranter Beastie(s)" , even the local caves were searched but the "Beastie" was never found.
One of the curiosities about the whole affair was that it was almost always Bulls ; Stags ; and Tups ( Rams) which were attacked, this led to the local practice of seeking female companionship when travelling on the hills , a tradition which is probably the basis of one of Sir Harry's remembered recordings ...."Roamin in the Gloamin".

Faced with heavy financial losses , Sir Harry eventually capitulated and sold the ground to the Forestry Commission in 1921 , when the present forest was planted. The "Beastie" was never found.
