In 21 years of local government service, Rex Morpeth was a borough councillor from 1962-65 and mayor from 1965 to 1976. After local body amalgamation he was Mayor of the combined district until 1980 and then spent a final three-year term as a district councillor. Mr Morpeth was the Eastern Bay of Plenty representative on the Bay of Plenty Catchment Commission from 1962-1977 and inaugural chairman of the Bay of Plenty United Council until his retirement in 1983. Other responsibilities included being an executive member of the New Zealand Municipal Association and the Municipal Electricity Supply Authorities' Association. His national contribution was recognised with a Queen's Service Order award in 1978. For many years, Mr Morpeth owned a Strand clothing store founded by his father.
