Geocache Description:

The cache is at the site of a Carlin Stane, one of only 12 or so in Scotland.

This is the first of what we hope will be a series of caches based on interesting features we have seen on maps. Whilst looking at the map we noticed the "Carlin Stane" marked and decided to investigate further.

From Wikipedia :

"Carlin Stone or Carlin Stane is the name given to a number of prehistoric standing stones and natural stone or landscape features in Scotland. The significance of the name is unclear, other than its association with old hags, witches, and the legends of the Cailleach.

A Carlin Stone is situated on Whitelee Moor near Craigends Farm, below Cameron's Moss near Waterside in East Ayrshire. A nearby watercourse is known as the Carlin Burn, joining the Hareshawmuir water just below the site of the Carlin stone. The stone has been much visited in the past; indicated by the remains of a footbridge running to it across the Hareshawmuir Water."

Access to the cache site is not easy and when we placed it we ended up absolutely soaked - and it wasn't raining. But the "stane" itself is mightily impressive and made us appreciate the effort to get there.

The other caches in the "interesting map features" series are :

GC2CDKV - Star and Garter
GC2CDRW - Double Dam
GC2CGTM - Dunton Cove
GC2CJ1Z - Craigendunton Reservoir
GC2CNEZ - The Weavers Trail
GC2CNN3 - What a Place for a Picnic
GC2CZ58 - Spiersbridge Branch Line
GC2D520 - Jurassic Moss
GC3AHYC - Cuckoo Stone

Congratulations to aljomorton - FTF on the 27/7/10.
