The treasure of the Norwegian Road Museum
Welcome to the Norwegian Road Museum, one of the few remaining
free museums out there. The museums consists of a 300 000 m2
outdoor area and several museum buildings including the Norwegian
Rock Blasting Museum. There's a cafeteria on the grounds as well as
an old village shop that has been moved from its original location
to the museum, restored and is now selling products that you'd find
in such a store in the 1950's.
The main museum building houses a large historical exhibit that
takes you through the road history in Norway. It also has a road
safety exhibit with several interactive elements that aim to
promote road safety. A 2 year exhibit bicycle exhibit opened in
2010 and is currently filling the temporary exhibit spot in the
museum's main building.
Around the museum park you'll find several old vehicles and
machines ranging from old tractors to giant dumpers (and I do mean
giant, check out the image gallery and you'll see what I mean).
There are also old buildings that have been moved here from all
around Norway. The village shop is open during summer, and so is
the blacksmith who will show you how they forged in the old days
(on select days only). Some days there is also a veteran bus
operating in the museum park, where you can catch a ride around the
park.
The starting coordinates indicate a good place to park. Do
NOT drive into the museum park itself.
The museum is open Tuesday-Sunday from 11-17 during summer and from
10-15 during winter, but the parking area is open from around 7 all
week (people are at work even if it's closed). I recommend visiting
during the opening hours to take a look at the museum itself along
with the cache. If you do visit outside these hours, there are a
couple of places along the road coming from the north to the museum
where it's possible to park.
The cache is a large treasure chest locked with a
combination lock. It has a lot of toys in it, well above normal
value for cahches. The idea is to give geocachers with small
children at least one cache around here that has some actual
content and not just a bunch of cheap broken Kinderegg items.
Please do not abuse this and be sure to follow the "trade even or
up" rule, or the cache will get boring quickly.
The cache is placed indoors in one of the buildings where it is
safe from the weather and where you can log in it peace, both when
the museum is open and when it's not. I've worked at this museum
for 7 years and the cache is placed with the full permission of the
museum director, so you're not doing anything wrong in going in to
find the cache. The cache is located in the basement of the
building that the final coordinates point to, and is not locked
– do not try to break into the locked main floor!
To find the cache you'll need to visit several locations around the
park and collect information to calculate the final coordinates as
well as the combination for the lock. The information needed is
mostly located on information signs near various interesting
locations around the park and you frankly don't need a GPS to find
the various waypoints as they are very easy to see. A map of the
park can be downloaded here.
This map is also available in paper form in the lobby of the main
museum building. Each stage listed below also list what map point
the location is on this map.
At each location you'll have to find a number, indicated by
lower-case letters in the stage description below. You use these to
calculate a number, indicated by upper case letters, which will go
into the final coordinates or combination for the lock. For
example, Stage 2 requires you to find a 3 digit number, indicated
by bbb, which you'll use to calculate a 2 digit final number,
indicated by BB.
Stage 1 (Museum map point 4): Nybakken N 61° 13.680 E 010°
25.810
Information sign: "Nybakken [aaaa-aa]"
A = ((the sum of the digits) – 4) /3
Stage 2 (Museum map point 6): Engerodden N 61° 13.740 E 010°
25.750
BB = bbb – 13
Stage 3 (Museum map point 7): Blindheimsvik (store) N 61°
13.785 E 010° 25.685
C = (the sum of the digits) – 7
Stage 4 (Museum map point 9): Høydalsmo (blacksmith) N 61°
13.810 E 010° 25.664
vegvesenet begynte å sette opp ute i distriktene for å kunne
anskaffet utover i [dddd]-årene"
DD = (the sum of the digits) – 2
Stage 5 (Museum map point 14): Gosen N 61° 13.667 E 010°
25.634
EE = (the sum of the digits) + 15
Stage 6 (Museum map point 17): The Rock Blasting Museum N
61° 13.572 E 010° 25.568
The "Inngang"-sign is attached to an old curious object which is
held together with a ring of nuts and bolts. How many such
nuts/bolt sets make up the ring?
F = ((number of nuts/bolts) – 1) / 3
Stage 7 (between map point 19 and 3): Sign Post N 61° 13.646
E 010° 25.747
The sign posts has a number of signs on it – how many?
GG = ((number of signs) * 3) + 10
Stage 1-4 gives you the last digits for the coordinates, while
stage 5-7 gives you the combination for the lock.
Final coordinates
N 61° 13.ABB
E 010° 25.CDD
Combination
To open the lock:
Turn the dial to the right and stop at EE
Turn the dial one whole turn to the left and then stop at F
Turn the dial to the right and stop at GG
