The starting point for this cache (given co-ordinates) is the railway car parking area located adjacent to the old manufacturing site affectionately known by the locals simply as ‘ICI’
Historical Background
In 1912 the Chiswick Soft Soap and Polish Company Ltd., purchased a triangular one-acre site by Yalding railway station; well served by rail, road & river. This company’s most famous product – Cherry Blossom shoe polish- is said to owe its name to a cherry orchard in Yalding. Two years later they sold out to a local consortium of fruit & hop growers becoming the Yalding Manufacturing Co. Ltd During the 1920’s a series of amalgamations resulted in the formation of Cooper, McDougall and Robertson Ltd. Then in 1928 they acquired the local Beltring business of Abol Ltd., owned by E A White, producing the well known ‘Spimo’ hop wash based on quassia. By 1937 having absorbed Tomlinson and also Hayward this major crop protection group merged interests with ICI to form Plant Protection Ltd., (PPL) under the control of ICI Dyestuffs Division. In 1958 a remaining buy-out resulted in PPL becoming a wholly-owned ICI subsidiary and by 1964 part of ICI Agricultural Division. Divisional status (ICI Plant Protection Division) occurred in 1975 and then in 1987 following acquisition of the Stauffer Chemical Company, a new corporate image saw the site operate globally as ICI Agrochemicals. But in June 1993 for the first time in over 50 years the ICI name vanished from Yalding as the company demerged the bioscience business as Zeneca. The final name change to Syngenta came in November 2000 from the merger of the agribusinesses of AstraZeneca & Novartis. Any celebrations were short lived as business rationalisation resulted in the ultimate site closure on 19 December 2003 after a successful period of 90 years producing crop protection & public health products that helped feed, clothe and protect the world.
