Obec Poruba leží v Hornonitrianskej kotline, v nadmorskej výške 414 m, severozápadne, vo vzdialenosti 12 km od okresného mesta Prievidza. Od západu ju obklopuje Strážovská vrchovina s Malou Magurou dosahujúcou výšku 1146 m, zo severu sú južné svahy Malej Fatry s Klakom (1353 m) a smerom na východ ju obopína pohorie Žiar so zrúcaninami Vyšehradu (829 m). Smerom juhovýchodným sa tiahne pohorie Vtácnik (1346 m). Prvá písomná správa o obci pochádza z roku 1339, ale už z roku 1302 je písomná zmienka, v ktorej Václav III. potvrdil Matúšovi Cákovi vlastníctvo Bojníc a bojnického panstva. K tomuto územiu patrila aj Poruba. Názov Poruba vznikol tak, že okolité lesy panstvo využívalo na získavanie dreva, teda rúbanie – rúban – porúbat – Poruba. V minulosti mala obec aj nemecké meno Niekelsdorf a neskôr madarské Mohos.

Poruba má co ponúknut nielen milovníkom histórie, ale aj športu. V katastri obce sa nachádza lyžiarske stredisko s tromi vlekmi a sietou horských chodníkov vhodných na bežecké lyžovanie. V lete ju navštevuje množstvo turistov, hubárov, ale aj cyklistov, pretože podhorské cesty ju spájajú s okolitými dedinami a Bojnicami. Neoddelitelnou súcastou obce je najmä prekrásna príroda. Patria k nej aj cisté pramene a studnicky.

Jedna z nich, sa nachádza pod kaplnkou na vrchu krížovej cesty za obcou. V jej blízkosti hladajú pokoj nielen veriaci na spolocných pútach, ale aj tí, ktorí veria v jej liecivú moc. Kaplnku dal v roku 1884 postavit tunajší richtár na mieste, kde sa údajne zjavila Panna Mária.

Poruba has much to offer not only lovers of history, but also sport. In the village there is a ski resort with three lifts and a network of mountain trails suitable for cross country skiing. In summer many tourists visit it, mushroom pickers, but also offers as piedmont road linking it with surrounding villages and Bojnice.
An integral part of the village is especially beautiful nature. It also includes the clean springs and wells. One of them is under the chapel at the top of the cross-roads of the village. Its close seek peace, not only believers in the common chains, but also those who believe in its healing power. The chapel was built in 1884, the local mayor on the spot where the Virgin Mary supposedly appeared.
