Geocache Description:

A camo-d micro.

TRAILHEAD COORDS: N 32 19.053 W 064 50.659

This cemetery is approximately a 35 minute walk (or less) from the cruise ship pier in Dockyards (or another 10 minutes down the road from our geocache “Hidden Ships Crests and Emblems”. Alternatively, it is a short bus or scooter ride (bus route 7,8) from Dockyards. The cemetery is located on a one-way street.

Tucked away behind a row of homes and not immediately visible from the road, Convict cemetery has a story to tell. Here you will find the final resting place for convicted prisoners. These individuals, mainly from England, were sent to Bermuda to work as labourers. In total, 9000 convicts worked here, 2000 died. There are only 13 marked graves in the cemetery and all are on unconsecrated ground.

You may notice that the cemetery is surrounded by several Virginia Cedar trees. These trees, along with the Bermuda Cedar were very abundant on the island when it was first settled in the early 1600's. Cedar was used to build homes and churches, even ships. In 1944 the cedars were infested with a fungus and within 10 years, 90% of the trees were dead. Today,Bermuda cedar is rare and is used for custom furniture, window frames, trim and entrance doors. It is seen as a sign of wealth.

From the graveyard, take a stroll to the water's edge and check out the sea glass beach. People like to collect the "polished-by the-waves" glass pieces to make crafts. Maybe you'll find something special there too.
