The Tin Woodman (sometimes referred to as the Tin Man or the Tin Woodsman, the latter names appearing only in adaptations, the former used by Baum) is a character in the fictional Land of Oz created by American author L. Frank Baum. Baum's Tin Woodman first appeared in his classic 1900 book, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, and reappeared in many other Oz books. In late 19th century America, men made out of various tin pieces were used in advertising and political cartoons. Baum, who was editing a magazine on decorating shop windows when he wrote The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, was reportedly inspired to invent the Tin Woodman by a figure he had built out of metal parts for a shop display.
John Joseph "Jack" Haley (August 10, 1898 – June 6, 1979) portrayed the Tin Woodman in The Wizard of Oz movie. He also portrayed farmworker Hickory, who appeared in the Kansas sequences, in the film. The original Tin Woodman was Buddy Ebsen (Uncle Jed in the Beverly Hillbillies). He was slated to play the Tin Woodman but was replaced after the makeup made with Aluminum dust made him gravely ill
Here are some interesting differences between the book and the movie..
+ The three farm workers, Professor Marvel, and Miss Gulch do not appear in any Oz book at all.
+ When Dorothy and the Scarecrow first encounter the Tin Man, his jaws, rather incredibly, are the only part of his body not rusted, and he speaks clearly. His jaws rust later in a scene not in the film, in which he cries.
+ The gift given to the Tin Man is not a heart clock but a stuffed satin heart put into the Woodsman's chest and then patched over with tin.
