Crowland is a small town in South Lincolnshire positioned between Peterborough and Spalding with two sites of particular historical interest. They are the unique fourteenth Century three-sided Trinity Bridge which, standing in the town centre, used to be the confluence of three streams; the other is its ruined mediaeval Abbey that was dedicated to St Mary the Virgin, St Bartholomew and St Guthlac in the eighth century.
Crowland enjoys an occasional crane passing through. The crane is a huge, graceful, mainly grey bird with long legs, a long neck and drooping, curved tail feathers. Small numbers pass through Britain in spring and autumn, and there is a tiny breeding population in eastern England. Numbers in Europe have declined over the last 300 years because of disturbance, shooting and drainage. (RSPB)
Cranes can often be spotted in this area (especially the Large Yellow Mechanical variety) but if you hang around long enough you are more likely to spot a short eared owl.
