The area around this cache used to be completely accessible to cattle. Over a period of time, their activities along the shore of the Thompson River, and Harper Creek had denuded the vegetation, resulting is silting of the river and erosion of the banks. Ducks Unlimited along with the Federal Government, the City of Kamloops and the local land owner, fenced the area to keep cattle out of it. In order to provide a water source for the cattle, a gravity system with troughs and underground piping has been built in the fields on the north side of the road. DU then planted a variety of shrubs and trees that would grow quickly and stabilize the banks of both the river and Harper Creek. What was once a stretch of barren clay banks is now a lush riparian zone used by countless birds and animals every year.
