The Causeway was immortalized in the opening
scenes of the Elvis Presley movie Follow That Dream. The
movie was adapted from the novel Pioneer Go Home based on a
true story about Florida squatters building a shack community by
the side of the road on dredged land... Your CO read that book in
Readers Digest Condensed Books* ( Anyone
remember those?)
In the film you will see that the causeway
is engulfed by beautiful Australian Pines, planted due to their
resistance to salt water. Most of them died during an extreme
freeeze in the sixties, if memory serves, and are now replaced with
Palms. A small stand of Pines can still be seen on the north shore
of the Causeway--remnants or legacies, perhaps???
This cache takes you deep into a mangrove
swamp--or does it? Watch Your Step.
