Geocache Description:

The Dayton plant (FERC #287) was constructed in the 1920s and has a nameplate rating of 3.6 MW. It has an additional undeveloped capacity of 630 kW at this 23-foot structure.

Dam Type……………….Arch Buttress Concrete Overflow Overall Length and Height… ...…….. 594’ Long x 23’ High Power Canal…………………………..900’ Long x 135’ Wide Penstock……………………………………………………..N/A Spillway Description: 1-Arch Buttress Concrete Overflow........594’ x 23’ 1-Earthen Embankment...………………..200’ Long 1-Head Gate Structure………..4–15.5’ x 9.5’ Gates In 1925 this Dam was an innovation in design. The dam is hollow thus used much less material in its construct while still retaining it's strength. North American Hydro who owns and operates this dam is very generous to the Scouting program and has developed a very nice campground on it's properties for use by the Scouts. The image I chose for the background is from the winter of 09/10 when a huge ice flow jammed up the river. Ice in this image is 20 feet thick. It is amazing what mother nature can do. This dam also serves as a barrier to the Asian Carp which are the scourge of the Illinois River. Congratulations Myaki on FTF!
