In a glade by the shore side path from Swirls to the Dam at Thirlmere. The path following the shore is rough and slippery in places so is not ideal for bikes (we pushed ours). The spot gives the first view of the Dam (at least we think it does) and is passed if you are doing the circuit of Thirlmere. Easy to find with the clue you might be STUMPED without it....... Cache is about a mile from the viewpoint
Following the path from Swirls signposted the Dam, take the route down by the lakeshore. As you walk you see the Hotel to your right past the hotel you go through woods. The path is rough in places (we were pushing bikes and found it hard going). Enter a glade formed by the felling of some big deciduous trees; we stopped here for a coffee and a breather (about a mile from Swirls car park). Even with the rain there was a lot of plant, insect and bird life here. We sat on a large stump and had coffee. Josh was looking at the Dam and started to hum a tune......the rest is history... Dambusters was born........... We think this the first spot you see the dam from (another reason for the name). We rejoined the main logging trail and finished a circuit of Thirlmere on road at the far side as the lakeshore path was too rough for the kids on bikes...
The container is a clear box with a blue lid and contains Pirate patch, book, stamp etc Travel bugs Cheeky and Ivor released here.
PS we did this as part of a ride round Thirlmere on Bikes starting at Wythburn and following the logging trail along the side of Hellvellyn to Swirls, Then following the trail by the lakeshore , then round to the Dam and back to Wythburn via the far side of Thirlmere. About 10 miles in total.. Kids enjoyed it but very damp!
