Geocache Description:

This cache is the first of an intended series of caches I am starting in the municipality of Marousi as a tribute to my hometown and with the purpose of highlighting its hidden beauties.
The modern day Marousi is unfortunately overpopulated and overdeveloped with multi-storey buildings hosting huge Business Corporations and Commercial Centres.
However if you stray from the main avenues you can discover hidden among the alleys bits and pieces from its wondrous past.

Marousi or Athmonon as called in ancient times , is populated since the second millenium before Christ.
Founded by King Athmonas was one of the 10 main municipalities which all together consisted the town-state of Athens
In classical years Marousi it was famous for its wine and oil and its residents were considered as the most peaceloving people of all Athens and thus it was selected as one of the 4 cities which hosted the Regional Olympic Games; since during the olympic Games no fighting or dispute was allowed. (The other three cities being Delfi, Nemea, and Isthmia).
The main Olympic Games took place every 4 years in Olympia.
This explains partly the reasons why Marousi was selected by the Greek Goverment for the Olympic Stadium to be built there and host the modern Olympic Games of 2004.
The Regionan Olympic Games in Athmonon were named Amarysia since they were dedicated to the goddess Amarysia Artemida.
Every year in spring-time athlets from all over Greece were gathered in Athmonon to pray and give their offerings in the temple of the goddess, and then the games took place in the surrounding plains (and what a coincindence those plains lied in the exact same place were today lies the olympic Stadium of Athens).
The temple of the goddess Amarysia Artemida does not exist anymore but in its place in Byzantine times a church was built named "Panagia Neratziotissa".
This cache is dedicated to this church of "Panagia Neratziotissa" .
If you ask any Athenian what the name "Neratziotissa" means to him/her , the answer will be a straight one. "Neratziotissa" is the metro station for the Olympic Stadium and/or the largest commercial centre of Greece , "The Mall".
If you tell him/her that the name "Neratziotissa" derives from a very old church in Marousi the answer will be that this church was probably bulldozed in order to build the Commercial Centre or the Olympic Stadium.
Well the purpose of this cache is to set things right.
Finding this cache means finding the church of "Panagia Neratziotissa".
If you do not wish to drive there by car the best way is to use the metro lines and get of at Neratziotissa Station.
The church lies about 650 meters far from the metro station following the metro rail-lines (the lines are above ground in this area so they are easy to follow) towards the next station of Marousi.

The cache is a very small container containing a geocache declaration in greek and english, and a logbook, please bring your own pen.
Kindly bear in mind that the area is both residential and commercial so pls try not to get spotted while handling the cache

Αυτή η κρύπτη είναι η πρώτη μιας σειράς από κρύπτες που σκοπεύω να τοποθετήσω στο Δήμο Αμαρουσίου, ως φόρο τιμής στην ιδιαίτερη πατρίδα μου και με σκοπό την ανάδειξη των κρυμμένων θυσαυρών της περιοχής.
Το σύγχρονο Μαρούσι είναι, δυστυχώς, πυκνοκατοικημένο και γεμάτο πολυώροφα κτίρια που φιλοξενούν πολυεθνικές Επιχειρήσεις και εμπορικά Κέντρα.
Ωστόσο, εάν ξεστρατίσετε από τις κεντρικές λεωφόρους, μπορείτε να ανακαλύψετε κρυμμένα στα σοκάκια κομμάτια από το θαυμαστό παρελθόν αυτού του Δήμου .

Το Μαρούσι ή Άθμονον , όπως ονομάζοταν στην αρχαιότητα, κατοικείται από τη δεύτερη χιλιετία προ Χριστού.
Ιδρύθηκε από τον βασιλιά Άθμονα και ήταν ένας από τους 10 κύριους δήμους, οι οποίοι όλοι μαζί αποτελούσαν την πόλη-κράτος της Αθήνας
Στα κλασικά χρόνια το Μαρούσι ήταν διάσημο για το κρασί και το λάδι του και οι κάτοικοί του θεωρούνταν ως οι πλέον ειρηνόφιλοι άνθρωποι σε όλη την Αθήνα και γι αυτό ως μία από τις 4 διοργανώτριες πόλεις για τους Περιφερειακούς Ολυμπιακούς Αγώνες. Δεδομένου ότι κατά τη διάρκεια των Ολυμπιακών Αγώνων δεν επιτρεπόταν κανένας πόλεμος ή διαμάχη (Οι άλλες τρεις πόλεις ήταν οι Δελφοί, η Νεμέα και τα Ίσθμια).
Η κύριοι Ολυμπιακοί Αγώνες διεξάγωνταν κάθε 4 χρόνια στην Ολυμπία.
Αυτό εξηγεί εν μέρει τους λόγους για τους οποίους το Μαρούσι επιλέχθηκε από την ελληνική κυβέρνηση για να κατασκευαστεί εκεί το Ολυμπιακό Στάδιο και να διεξαχθούν εκεί οι σύγχρονοι Ολυμπιακούς Αγώνες το 2004.
Η περιφερειακοί Ολυμπιακών Αγώνες στο Άθμονον κατανομάζονται Αμαρύσια και ήταν αφιερωμένοι στην θεά Αρτέμιδα Αμαρυσία .
Κάθε χρόνο την άνοιξη αθλητές από όλη την Ελλάδα συγκεντρώνονταν στο Athmonon για να προσευχηθούν και να δώσουν τις προσφορές τους στο ναό της θεάς, και στη συνέχεια οι αγώνες ελάμβαννα χώρα στη γύρω πεδιάδες (και τι σύμπτωση σε εκείνες ακριβώς πεδιάδες έχει χτιστεί σήμερα το Ολυμπιακό στάδιο της Αθήνας).
Ο ναός της θεάς Αρτέμιδας Αμαρυσίας δεν υπάρχει πια, αλλά στη θέση του κατά τους βυζαντινούς χρόνους χτίστηκε Ναός αφιερωμένος στην "Παναγία Νερατζιώτισσα" .
Αυτή η κρύπτη λοιπόν είναι αφιερωμένη σε αυτό ακριβώς το εκκλησάκι της Παναγίας Νερατζιώτισσας.
Αν ρωτήσετε έναν Αθηναίο τι του λέει το όνομα «Νερατζιώτισσα» η απάντηση θα είναι απλή . «Νερατζιώτισσα» είναι ο σταθμός του μετρό για το Ολυμπιακό Στάδιο και το μεγαλύτερο εμπορικό κέντρο στην Ελλάδα, "The Mall".
Αν του αναφέρετε ότι το όνομα «Νερατζιώτισσα» προέρχεται από μια πολύ παλιά εκκλησία στο Μαρούσι η απάντηση θα είναι ότι η εκκλησία αυτή πιθανότατα έχει κατεδαφιστεί , ώστε να οικοδομηθεί το Εμπορικό Κέντρο ή το Ολυμπιακό Στάδιο.
Σκοπό λοιπόν της παρούσας cκρύπτης είναι να βάλει τα πράγματα στην θέση τους .
Εύρεση αυτής της κρύπτης σημαίνει και εξεύρεση της Παναγίας της Νερατζιώτισσας.
Εάν δεν θέλετε να οδηγείσετε το αυτοκίνητο μέχρι εκεί ο καλύτερος τρόπος είναι να πάρετε το μετρό και να κατεβείτε στο σταθμό "Νερατζιώτισσα".
Η εκκλησία βρίσκεται περίπου 650 μέτρα μακριά από το σταθμό του μετρό , αν ακολουθήσετε τις σιδηροδρομικές γραμμές με κατεύθυνση τον επόμενο σταθμό του Αμαρουσίου.

Η κρύπτη είναι ένα μικρό κουτάκι που περιέχει δήλωση GEOCACHE στα ελληνικά και αγγλικά και ένα ημερολόγιο, καλό είναι να κρατάτε στυλό μαζί σας.
Επειδή η περιοχή είναι οικιστικά και εμπορικά αναπτυγμένη σας παρακαλώ προσπαθήστε να σας πάρουν χαμπάρι οι περαστικοί όσο ψάχνετε για την κρύπτη.

Ολοκαίνουργιο κουτί. Προσοχή όμως το σχήμα, το μέγεθος και το χρώμα του κουτιού είναι τώρα διαφορετικά. Μπορείτε να πάρετε μια ιδέα για το νέο κουτί αν δείτε στις φωτογραφίες.
