Geocache Description:

A nice and easy cache and dash for you, but be warned! This is a good sized cache, in a very public place, so please be careful!

I have upgraded the terrain rating after the cache was moved by muggles and I decided to leave it in it's new home!

I love this thing, it's so..... functional!

Telford, as the signs tell us, was the birthplace of industry. It won't surprise you to know therefore that a few of these were used around the place.

It is a steam hammer, invented (probably!) by James Nasmyth, a Scot, in 1838. It was developed in response to a plea from the chief engineer of the Great Weston Steam Company who was struggling to find machines big, powerful and controlable enough to build the SS Great Britain.

Nasmyth liked to demonstrate his new toy by using it to smash an egg placed in a wine glass, obviously without smashing the glass.

Regardless of any dispute over who invented the steam hammer, Nasmyth certainly built this one, as it has both his name and that of his Foundry at Patricroft.

It may not look like the most exciting thing in the world, but go and see what must be one of the last operating steam hammers in the world in action in the Foundry at Blists Hill Museum, just down the road in Madeley. It's very dramatic and well worth the visit! Quite a sight!
