Geocache Description:

As part of their 90th anniversary, Engineers Australia developed a booklet describing the story of Adelaide's engineering heritage. This cache is one of a series of five which gives you a walking tour of the sites.

The booklet is an interesting read and contains the four walking maps and links to the sites you will need to visit to complete this multicache. You can pick up a hard copy booklet at the Visitor Centre in Rundle Mall or at the South Australian Division of Engineers Australia.

Alert: You are about to download a file in order to obtain further details needed to find this geocache. You can download the booklet here.

The lid of each cache also contains a clue which will help you find the fifth cache.

Take some time to visit all the sites in the booklet; you'll learn more about 'the hidden profession' and discover some amazing things about our beautiful city!

Engineering a City #2: Around the River

Waypoint Site Number Name Question Answer
EAC201 E9 The Albert Bridge Beneath the bridge are three supporting arches. Look at the peak of the arch under the North West corner of the bridge, near the Foundation Stone of 1878. Civil engineers are riveting and should be able to tell you why there is an additional plate (2-3 ft long) riveted on here!
How many rivets attach it to the arch?
EAC202 E12 Cast and fabricated iron fencing (originally in Victoria Square) Another amazing example of heritage reuse in Adelaide! I have a sketch on my wall showing this fence in Victoria Square in 1885.
Find the section of fencing leading to the University gates opposite the footbridge. Each section of fence consists of a series of small spikes in between two large spikes. How many small spikes are there in one straight section of fence (odd number) plus one curved section of fence (even number)?
EAC203 W7 Creswell Garden arch What number is on the traffic light nearest to this arch?
EAC204 W13 Prefabricated rotunda imported from Glasgow's Saracen Foundry How many pillars are marked as being presented by the shy and retiring Sir Thomas Elder in 1881?
EAC205 W11 Plaques from the Victoria Bridge Find the engineers who share the same surname. How many letters in their surname?
EAC206 W9 Torrens Weir Find the shield celebrating the opening of the Torrens Lake in 1881. Eight years later this engineer was crippled when he tried to free the jammed gates of the weir during a flood. How many letters in his surname?
Total (checksum = 9)
Latitude decimal minutes = 55 + (Total + EAC202)/1000
Longitude decimal minutes = 35.4 + (Total + EAC205)/1000

The checksum should match the sum of all the digits in your total. To derive the latitude decimal minutes for GZ add your answer to EAC202 to the total, divide by 1000 and then add 55. To derive the longitude decimal minutes add your answer to EAC205 to the total, divide by 1000 and then add 35.4.

Enjoy your walk along the Torrens!
